1984–1989: Debut and career challenges

In addition to assisting Hussain, Aamir Khan took on roles in documentaries directed by students from the Film and Television Institute of India. Beyond his involvement in cinema, he showcased his skills in lawn tennis, representing his school in various state-level championships and earning the title of State Tennis winner for Maharashtra. It was during this time that director Ketan Mehta noticed Khan’s talents in these films and offered him a role in the low-budget experimental film, Holi.

Despite not pursuing higher studies after completing his 12th grade, Aamir Khan continued to explore his passion for cinema. His debut as a child actor was in the film “Yaadon Ki Baaraat,” considered the first Bollywood masala film. Remarkably, Aamir was just eight years old at that time. Prior to the production of “Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak,” another film, the crime thriller “Raakh,” directed by Bhattacharya, was released in 1989. Despite a lukewarm reception at the box office, the film garnered critical acclaim for its performances.

1990–2001: Successful career and acting break

In 1990, Aamir Khan had a prolific year, featuring in five films. To promote his movie ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak,’ facing budget constraints, Aamir, along with his co-star Raj Zutshi, took to the streets and personally pasted posters to create awareness. Despite these challenges, the film ‘Dil,’ directed by Indra Kumar, became a massive success.  Moving into 1997, Aamir acted in ‘Ishq,’ which performed well at the box office. ‘Raja Hindustani,’ another film in the same year, became a super blockbuster and received widespread admiration. In 1999, ‘Sarfarosh,’ directed by John Mathew Matthan, was moderately successful but received critical acclaim.

2005–2017: Acting comeback and directorial debut

In 2005, Aamir Khan made a noteworthy comeback as the lead in Ketan Mehta’s “Mangal Pandey: The Rising,” a film that was showcased at the Cannes Film Festival. His exceptional performance in “Lagaan” propelled the movie to the Oscars.

Moving to 2006, Khan starred in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s “Rang De Basanti.” The following year, in the film “3 Idiots,” the role of Raju Rastogi was initially designated for Aamir Khan, but he expressed interest in the character of Rancho and captivated the audience with his incredible acting. His performance earned critical acclaim, securing him a Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor and multiple nominations for Best Actor. It also secured the title of the highest-grossing film in China in 2017.

2018–2022 present: Hiatus and career setbacks

In November 2018, Aamir Khan starred alongside Amitabh Bachchan in the action-adventure film “Thugs of Hindostan.” He shared that his wife, upon learning of his decision, encouraged him to reconsider. Despite the film’s commercial struggles, “Thugs of Hindostan” grossed ₹335 crore ($45 million) worldwide.

Aamir Khan made a cinematic comeback after a four-year hiatus with the release of a film on August 11, 2022. Unfortunately, the film, which opened to mixed reviews, performed poorly at the box office and was declared a “disaster.”
