She has a younger brother named Samir. Alka’s musical journey started at a very young age when she began singing for Akashvani (All India Radio) Calcutta at the age of six in 1972. Recognizing her exceptional talent, her mother took her to Mumbai at the age of 10 to pursue a career in music, despite initial advice to wait until her voice matured. During one of her visits to Mumbai, she received a letter of introduction to Raj Kapoor from his Kolkata distributor. This opportunity marked her debut as a Playback Singer in the song “Thirkat Ang” from the film “Payal Ki Jhankaar.”
