Indian Revolutionary (1922)

Alluri Sitaram Raju was a prominent revolutionary who actively participated in the Indian freedom struggle during that era. In 1920, the powerful ideas and principles advocated by Mahatma Gandhi deeply influenced Sitaram Raju. Inspired by Gandhiji’s teachings, he encouraged the tribal communities to abstain from alcohol consumption and resolve their conflicts through panchayats (local self-governing bodies).

Against the Madras Forest Act

In the year 1922, Alluri Sitaram Raju led a significant revolt against the implementation of the Madras Forest Act. This act subjected the tribal communities in the region to blatant exploitation and oppression at the hands of the British authorities. The tribal areas, inhabited by poor and illiterate people, became a target for the Britishers who took advantage of their vulnerable situation. Recognizing the plight of these indigenous communities, Sitaram Raju garnered support from the local tribal population, including the hereditary tax collectors, who had previously been responsible for collecting taxes from their fellow tribespeople.
