Early life

Bhagat Singh was born into a Punjabi Sikh family on September 27, 1907, in the village of Banga in the Lyallpur district of Punjab, which was then under British rule and is now part of Pakistan. He was the second of seven children, born to Vidyavati and Kishan Singh Sandhu—four sons and three daughters. After attending the village school in Banga for a few years, he joined the Dayanand Anglo-Vedic School in Lahore. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s Non-Cooperation Movement, Bhagat Singh soon became involved in the cause. Bhagat Singh completed his education at DAV High School and Lahore National College.

The Jallianwala Bagh massacre in 1919 and the killing of Akali protestors at Nankana Sahib in 1921 deeply affected him. Although initially aligned with his family’s belief in Gandhian non-violence, such incidents changed Bhagat Singh’s ideology. He was released on a surety of Rs. 60,000 five weeks after his arrest.
