Domestic Career

In his first-class cricket debut during the 2010–11 Ranji Trophy, Chahar made an astounding impact by taking eight wickets for 10 runs (8/10). This remarkable performance caught the attention of Rising Pune Supergiants, a team in the Indian Premier League Twenty20 cricket. Hyderabad faced a massive setback, scoring just 21 runs, marking the lowest total in Ranji Trophy history.

Later, in October 2016, he participated in Rajasthan’s development camp in Jaipur, where he received guidance from international coaches Ian Pont and Catherine Dalton. This experience added value to his skills. His journey continued to evolve as he was acquired by Chennai Super Kings in the 2018 IPL auction and later named in India B’s squad for the 2018–19 Deodhar Trophy in October 2018.

His association with Chennai Super Kings continued when he was picked again in February 2022 during the auction for the 2022 Indian Premier League tournament, further solidifying his position in the league.

International career

In May 2018, Chahar got the nod to join India’s Twenty20 International (T20I) squad for their England tour. His T20I debut happened on July 8, 2018, where he took one wicket. The journey continued as he debuted in One Day International cricket against Afghanistan during the 2018 Asia Cup in September 2018.

His standout performance came during the 2019 Twenty20 series against West Indies. In the final game, he bagged the Player of the Match award after claiming three wickets for just four runs. This success led to his inclusion in the three-match T20I series against Bangladesh. There, he made history by securing India’s first hat-trick by a bowler and his first five-wicket haul in T20Is. In the series’ final match, he set a new men’s T20I record for the best bowling figures, taking an incredible six wickets for only seven runs from 3.2 overs, surpassing Ajantha Mendis of Sri Lanka.

In July 2021, Chahar showcased his batting skills by scoring his first ODI half-century. He was later named among the three reserve players for India’s squad in the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in September.
