Dorabji hailed from a Parsi Zoroastrian family. In 1884, he became a part of the cotton business division within his father’s company. His father was a distinguished businessman and the founder of the Tata Group, while his mother was a homemaker. This familial connection also made Dorabji the uncle by marriage of Homi Bhabha. Additionally, he had a younger sister named Dhunbai Tata and a younger brother named Ratanji Tata.


At 38 years old, he entered into an arranged marriage with the lovely Meherbai Bhabha, the daughter of HJ Bhabha, who served as the inspector general of education in the former Mysore state. The couple, unfortunately, did not have any children. Their union was arranged by his father, who, during a visit to the Bhabha household, had the chance to meet and approve of young Meherbai, Bhabha’s only daughter. Despite not having children, Meherbai and Dorabji Tata enjoyed a content and harmonious marriage.


Sir Dorabji Tata was born on Saturday, August 27, 1859, in British India. He passed away at the age of 72.


He began his education at the Proprietary High School in Bombay (now Mumbai). In 1875, he was sent to Kent, England for private tutoring. Subsequently, he enrolled at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, in 1877, where he spent two years before coming back to Bombay in 1879. It was during his time in England that he developed a passion for sports. He further pursued his studies at St. Xavier’s College, Bombay, ultimately earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1882.

Subsequently, he was entrusted with the responsibility of setting up a textile project in Pondicherry, a chance given to him by his father to prove his mettle in business.
