Madhubala’s father, Ataullah Khan, was employed at the ‘Imperial Tobacco Company’ in Peshawar. Her mother’s name was Ayesha Begum. It is reported that Ataullah and Ayesha Begum had a total of 11 children, comprising four sons and seven daughters.

During the period of 1942 to 1947, Madhubala began her journey in the film industry and experienced progression into adult roles. Her talent and presence caught the attention of American magazines like Theatre Arts, further highlighting her growing prominence.
Madhubala’s breakthrough came when Chunnilal, a studio executive, approved her for a juvenile role in the Bombay Talkies’ production, “Basant” (1942), for a salary of ₹150. The film was released in July 1942 and achieved remarkable commercial success. However, despite this achievement, Khan, Madhubala’s father, faced disappointments and had to return his family to Delhi due to certain circumstances. In Delhi, he struggled to secure low-paying temporary jobs, and their financial situation remained challenging.
