Alongside her fellow actresses Nargis and Meena Kumari, Madhubala earned the endearing moniker of the Venus Queen.
Madhubala, also known as “Baby Mumtaz,” was a highly acclaimed Indian actress recognized for her remarkable contributions to the Hindi film industry. Born and raised in Delhi, she relocated to Bombay (now Mumbai) with her family at the age of 8. Despite starting with minor roles, Madhubala’s talent quickly gained attention, leading to significant roles in movies like ‘Neel Kamal’ (1947), ‘Amar Prem’ (1948), ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958), and ‘Half Ticket’ (1962). Madhubala’s father, Ataullah Khan, was employed at the ‘Imperial Tobacco Company’ in Peshawar. Her mother’s name was Ayesha Begum. It is reported that Ataullah and Ayesha Begum had a total of 11 children, comprising four sons and seven daughters.
She was born on 14 February 1933. At the death time, she is 36 years old.
She and Kishore Kumar, an Indian playback singer, and actor, tied the knot in 1960. Madhubala had no children.
Madhubala, a talented and graceful actor, passed away on 23rd February 1969, just nine days after celebrating her 36th birthday. Her untimely demise was attributed to a ventricular septal defect, a congenital heart condition.
During the period of 1942 to 1947, Madhubala began her journey in the film industry and experienced progression into adult roles. Her talent and presence caught the attention of American magazines like Theatre Arts, further highlighting her growing prominence.
Madhubala’s breakthrough came when Chunnilal, a studio executive, approved her for a juvenile role in the Bombay Talkies’ production, “Basant” (1942), for a salary of ₹150. The film was released in July 1942 and achieved remarkable commercial success. However, despite this achievement, Khan, Madhubala’s father, faced disappointments and had to return his family to Delhi due to certain circumstances. In Delhi, he struggled to secure low-paying temporary jobs, and their financial situation remained challenging.
