Career

Manisha originally dreamed of becoming a doctor, but she changed her mind and decided to pursue acting. Her father, Prakash Koirala, had a prominent political career, serving as a Cabinet minister and member of Nepal’s House of Representatives, while her mother, Sushma Koirala, took care of their home. During her time in New Delhi, she took on some modeling assignments. Her brother, Siddharth Koirala, was once an actor in Bollywood.

Her acting journey began with a Nepali movie called ‘Pheri Bhetaula’ in 1989. She attended Vasant Kanya Mahavidyalaya in Varanasi up until Class X. Her first Hindi film was ‘Saudagar’ in 1991. However, it was the movies ‘1942: A Love Story’ (1994) directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and ‘Bombay’ (1995) directed by Mani Ratnam that brought her into the spotlight.

Though she initially aspired to become a doctor and studied at the Army Public School in New Delhi, her focus shifted to acting. In 1996, her role as a battered wife in the Hindi drama ‘Agni Sakshi’ was well-received. Living independently in Delhi, she found strength and independence.

Her performance in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s debut film ‘Khamoshi: The Musical’ in the same year portrayed her as a caring daughter of deaf and mute parents. Eager to pursue an acting career, she moved to Mumbai. Her outstanding acting earned her a place in Filmfare magazine’s list of ‘80 Iconic Performances’.
