Oommen Chandy, an esteemed Indian politician and statesman, held the position of the 10th Chief Minister of Kerala from 2004 to 2006, and later from 2011 to 2016. In recognition of his efforts in “Preventing and Combating Corruption in the Public Service” in the Asia-Pacific region, Oommen Chandy was honored with the United Nations Public Service Award in 2013.

Oommen Chandy, a beloved leader, drew crowds in large numbers to his Mass Contact Programme across the state, reflecting the immense confidence people had in him and his unwavering dedication to assist them. From 2006 to 2011, he also served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Legislative Assembly. In recognition of his remarkable contributions, Oommen Chandy was bestowed with the award in Bahrain by Wu Hongbo, the then UN Under Secretary General for Economic and Social Affairs. His journey began as the unit president of KSU at St George High School, Puthupally, and eventually led him to become the State President of the organization. Oommen Chandy passionately represented the Puthuppally constituency as an MLA in the State Assembly from 1970 until his passing in 2023.

He began his political journey in 1958 through the Orana Samara of KSU. He held the position of unit president of KSU at St. George High School, Puthupally, and later became the State President of the organization. Chandy has made significant contributions to various portfolios, including his role as the Home Minister in the second K. Karunakaran Ministry from December 28, 1981, to March 17, 1982. He has also been actively involved with trade unions affiliated with INTUC and has led several mass movements advocating for the rights of common people.
