PT Usha was born into a loving family in Payyoli, Calicut, Kerala, to parents E.P.M. Paithal and T. V. Lakshmi. Her father worked as a cloth merchant, while her mother dedicated herself to the noble profession of teaching. PT Usha is blessed with one brother, named Praveen, and four sisters, including Shobha and Suma.

Pilavullakandi Thekkeparambil Usha’s journey to becoming one of India’s most renowned female athletes began in 1977 when she caught the attention of O. M. Nambiar, a respected Indian athletics coach. It was at the sports prize-distribution ceremony that her talent and potential were first recognized.

Usha’s exceptional abilities soon became evident as she achieved remarkable success at the inter-state meet for juniors in Kollam in 1978, where she secured an impressive six medals. Her outstanding performances in that event marked the beginning of a remarkable career filled with numerous victories and accolades. Recognized for her lean physique and remarkable speed, Usha quickly gained popularity and admiration within the athletic community. In 1982, she had the opportunity to showcase her skills on an international stage when she participated in the World Junior Invitation Meet, now known as the World Junior Athletics Championship, held in Seoul.   • The most well-known student in Usha’s athletics program is Tintu Luka, holding the 800-meter national record and won gold at the Asian Games.
  • The 400-meter hurdles race at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles was Usha’s greatest performance and her deepest heartbreak. She lost out on the bronze medal by 1/100th of a second.
  • Since her retirement in 2000, P.T. Usha and her students from the Usha School of Athletics, situated in Kinalur in Kerala’s Kozhikode, have had a regular presence in the national track and field competitions.
