Early life
Rajendra Prasad was born into a Kayastha family in the village of Ziradei, located in the Siwan district of Bihar, India, during the British Raj. His father, Mahadev Sahai Srivastava, was a proficient scholar in both Sanskrit and Persian languages. Rajendra Prasad received his primary education in his village and furthered his studies at the Chapra District School, where he displayed exceptional academic performance. His mother, Kamleshwari Devi, was a devout woman who often narrated stories from the Ramayana and Mahabharata to her son. At that time, the University’s jurisdiction extended over the regions of Bengal, Bihar, Orissa, and Assam. He was the youngest child in his family and had one elder brother and three elder sisters.
Career
Following his post-graduation, Rajendra Prasad embarked on an academic career by becoming a Professor of English at Langat Singh College in Muzaffarpur, Bihar. He later assumed the role of Principal at the same institution. In 1915, he took the master’s in law examination from the Department of Law at the University of Calcutta and not only passed with distinction but also received a gold medal for his achievement. In 1909, Rajendra Prasad left his teaching job and relocated to Calcutta to pursue a degree in Law. While studying Law at the University of Calcutta, he simultaneously taught Economics at Calcutta City College.
