Ramesh Bais, born on August 2, 1947, is an Indian politician currently holding the position of the 23rd Governor of Maharashtra since 2023. He has previously served as a member of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly. In 1978, Bais was elected to the Municipal Corporation of Raipur and also served as a member of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly from 1980 to 1984.

Bais, a prominent figure in Indian politics, has emerged victorious in seven Lok Sabha elections, the lower house of the Indian Parliament. An interesting incident occurred in 2003 when Raman Singh became the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, as Bais was a strong contender for the position. Demonstrating his political prowess, Bais served as a member of the 9th Lok Sabha in 1989, and subsequently, from the 11th to the 16th Lok Sabha (1996-2019). During his tenure, he also held the esteemed role of a Union Minister in the Government of India. Notably, on 12 February 2023, Bais was appointed as the 23rd Governor of Maharashtra.

Bais began his political journey by winning a seat in the Municipal Corporation of Raipur in 1978. In 1980, he contested and emerged victorious in the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections from the Mandir Hasod constituency, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party. However, in the subsequent 1985 Assembly election, he was defeated by his Congress opponent, Satyanarayan Sharma.

During his early political career, Bais also served as a member of the Estimates Committee from 1980 to 1982 and the Library Committee from 1982 to 1985. In 1989, Bais achieved his first election to the Indian Parliament as a member of the 9th Lok Sabha, representing Raipur. He was subsequently re-elected consecutively in the 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, and 16th Lok Sabha terms.
