The turning point in her life occurred upon the untimely demise of her husband, the Maharaja of Jhansi, Raja Gangadhar Rao Newalkar. In a controversial move, Lord Dalhousie, the British governor-general of India, refused to acknowledge the Maharaja’s adopted son as the rightful heir, citing the British “doctrine of lapse” as the basis for seizing control of Jhansi. Under the appellation of “Jhansi ki Rani,” Rani Lakshmibai proved to be an indomitable leader in her principality. The British, under the leadership of Lord Dalhousie, employed their “doctrine of lapse” to incorporate Jhansi into their dominion. A representative of the East India Trading Company was dispatched to oversee the administrative affairs of Jhansi.

Family

Lakshmibai faced the loss of her mother at the tender age of four. Her father, Moropant Tambe, served in the employ of Peshwa Baji Rao II in the Bithoor district. Her mother, Bhagirathi Sapre (Bhagirathi Bai), hailed from what is now the state of Maharashtra. This familial background provides insight into her roots and the environment in which she was raised.

Early life

Rani Lakshmibai, also spelled as Rani Lakshmi Bai, entered this world on 19 November 1828 (though some sources suggest 1835) in the town of Benares, now known as Varanasi. She was born into a Karhada Brahmin family. In May 1852, Manikarnika, as she was initially known, entered wedlock with Gangadhar Rao Newalkar, the Maharaja of Jhansi, and subsequently, in accordance with tradition, her name was changed to Lakshmibai. In 1851, Lakshmibai experienced the joy of motherhood when she gave birth to her son, Damodar Rao. Unfortunately, this happiness was short-lived, as her beloved son passed away after a mere four months of life. Her father was Moropant Tambe, and her mother was Bhagirathi Sapre (Bhagirathi Bai).

Tantia Tope and Lakshmi Bai launched a successful attack on the city fortress of Gwalior. On 17 June in Kotah-ki-Serai near the Phool Bagh of Gwalior, a squadron of the 8th (King’s Royal Irish) Hussars, under Captain Heneage, fought the large Indian force commanded by Rani Lakshmibai, who was trying to leave the area. After taking Gwalior, Lakshmi Bai marched east to Morar to face a British counterattack led by Rose.  The 8th Hussars charged into the Indian force, slaughtering 5,000 Indian soldiers, including any Indian “over the age of 16”. They took two guns and continued the charge right through the Phool Bagh encampment.

Rani Lakshmi Bai Revolt of 1857

Rani Lakshmi Bai was a brave leader from Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, who became famous during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. When news of the rebellion reached Jhansi, the Rani asked the British political officer, Captain Alexander Skene, for permission to raise a body of armed men for her protection; Skene agreed to this. She led the resistance against the British in her city. The city was relatively calm amid the regional unrest in the summer of 1857, but the Rani conducted a Haldi Kumkum ceremony with pomp in front of all the women of Jhansi to provide assurance to her subjects, and to convince them that the British were cowards and not to be afraid of them. She showed strong resolve in protecting her people and city from the British, symbolizing the spirit of standing up against them.
