Rishi Kapoor was the third child of Raj Kapoor and Krishna Kapoor. He had siblings – Randhir Kapoor, who was an actor, and Rajiv Kapoor, who worked as a filmmaker. Additionally, he had sisters named Ritu Nanda and Rima Jain. Among his nieces and nephews are Karisma Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Armaan Jain, Aadar Jain, Nitasha Nanda, and Nikhil Nanda. Shammi Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor were his uncles, while Nandi, Devi, and Urmila Sial were his aunts.

Relationships, Wife & Children

After dating for five years, Rishi tied the knot with Neetu Singh on January 22, 1980. They had two kids together: Ranbir Kapoor, who’s an actor, and Riddhima Kapoor, their daughter. Surprisingly, Rishi and Neetu got engaged during a friend’s wedding, keeping it a secret. Rishi’s book, “Khullam Khulla: Rishi Kapoor Uncensored,” co-authored with Meena Iyer, was released on January 15, 2017, published by HarperCollins. Their wedding reception took place at the RK Studio in Mumbai on January 23, 1980. Riddhima, their first child, was born on September 15, 1980, while Ranbir, their second child and an actor, arrived on September 28, 1982.

In 2016, he criticized the Nehru-Gandhi family for naming national assets after them. Rishi expressed frustration about delays in the execution of the Nirbhaya case convicts, pointing out flaws in the judicial system, echoing a famous dialogue from his movie “Damini.” Riddhima Kapoor, now a designer, married businessman Bharat Sahni in 2006, and the couple has two kids.

Rishi Kapoor kicked off his career as a child artist, portraying his father’s character in the famous film ‘Mera Naam Joker’. His brilliant performance earned him the National Film Award for Best Child Artist. With talent flowing in his veins and a natural creative flair, he struck gold right from the start. His first major adult role was in the 1973 film ‘Bobby’, where he starred opposite Dimple Kapadia, directed by his father. The overwhelming praise he received led him to snag the lead role in his father’s subsequent production, ‘Bobby’, a massive hit among young audiences, earning him the prestigious Filmfare Award for Best Actor. These consecutive successes firmly established his presence in the starry world.

Despite the assumption that ‘Bobby’ was solely made to launch his acting career, Rishi clarified in a 2012 interview that it was actually crafted to settle debts from ‘Mera Naam Joker’. This era made him the heartthrob of the nation during the 1970s. However, while he enjoyed early success, the emergence of new talents like Amitabh Bachchan, especially in his “angry young man” phase, began dominating the industry.

After ‘Bobby’, Rishi appeared in several light-hearted comedies in the 1970s, sharing the screen with stars like Neetu Singh, Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, and Zeenat Aman. His movies like ‘Khel Khel Mein’, ‘Rafoo Chakkar’, ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’, and ‘Hum Kisise Kum Naheen’ showcased his versatility. Although he attempted comebacks with films like ‘Nagin’, ‘Chandni’, and ‘Henna’, alongside Sridevi, these endeavors struggled to revive his image. His on-screen chemistry with Sridevi extended to multiple projects and eventually led to their marriage in 1980.

Rishi also ventured into directing with ‘Aa Ab Laut Chalen’, but it didn’t garner much success. However, his role alongside Tina Munim in Subhash Ghai’s ‘Karz’ in 1980 became a cult classic, largely due to its immensely popular soundtrack.

He passed away on April 30, 2020, a Thursday morning at 8:45 am, at the Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital in Mumbai. Rishi Kapoor had been fighting leukemia for over two years.
