Childhood & Early Life

Sachin Tendulkar, born on April 24, 1973, in Dadar, Bombay, Maharashtra, was the youngest of four siblings. His father, Ramesh Tendulkar, was a Marathi novelist, and his mother, Rajni, worked in the insurance industry. In his youth, he had a tendency towards being a bit of a troublemaker. He was named after his father’s favorite music director, Sachin Dev Burman. At the suggestion of his older brother, Sachin took up cricket as a way to channel his energy away from fights. He was enrolled in the coaching academy of Ramakant Achrekar. Following Achrekar’s advice, he attended ‘Sharadashram Vidyamandir High School,’ known for its strong cricketing tradition. In 1988, he and his friend Vinod Kambli set a record with a 664-run partnership in an inter-school match against St. Xavier’s High School.

Career

In 1988, Sachin Tendulkar began his domestic first-class career with Mumbai, and impressively, he notched up a century in his inaugural match. He concluded the season as the highest run-scorer. Just a year later, on December 11, 1988, at the age of 15 years and 232 days, Tendulkar debuted for Bombay against Gujarat at Wankhede Stadium, scoring an unbeaten 100. This achievement made him the youngest Indian cricketer to score a century on debut in first-class cricket.

Thanks to his outstanding performances in first-class matches, he quickly earned a spot in the national team. Bombay captain Dilip Vengsarkar picked him for the team after watching Tendulkar face Kapil Dev in the cricket practice nets at Wankhede Stadium, during a practice session between the Indian team and the touring New Zealand side.

Tendulkar made his international test debut against Pakistan in November 1989, when he was just 16 years old. He continued his impressive start by scoring a century in his initial appearances in the Deodhar and Duleep Trophies, two prestigious Indian domestic tournaments. Although he didn’t rack up many runs in the series, he garnered attention for his batting technique and unwavering dedication to the sport. Across six matches, he accumulated 583 runs at an average of 67.77, making him the eighth-highest run-scorer overall. He also made his debut in One Day International (ODI) cricket in 1989.

Net Worth

Given Tendulkar’s highly successful career and numerous endorsements, it comes as no surprise that his net worth is estimated to be around $168 million (Rs 980 crore), with an annual income of approximately $11 million (Rs 68 crores).
