He had intermittent appearances in the Indian one-day side, returning in 1993 but being dropped again the following year, partially due to his reputation as a subpar fielder.Notably, in a match against Gujarat, he scored 43 runs and achieved a remarkable six-wicket haul, which included a hat-trick. This outstanding performance led to his recall for the 1996 World Cup, followed by one more series appearance before facing another drop from the team.  He consistent performances during that season attracted the attention of selectors, earning him a spot on India’s tour of Pakistan in 1989–90.
