Savitribai Phule, born to Khandoji Nevase Patil and Laxmibai, had a father who worked for the railway. She was a cherished daughter and had two brothers and one sister. Savitribai was born approximately 50 kilometers away from Pune and about 15 kilometers from Shirval. At the young age of nine in 1840, she married Jyotirao Phule.

Savitribai Phule was born on June 1, 1981, in the village of Naigaon in Satara District, Maharashtra. As of 2024, she is 43 years old.

When Savitribai got married, she couldn’t read or write. Jyotirao took it upon himself to educate her and Sagunabai Shirsagar, his cousin, at their home while managing their farm. After completing her primary education with Jyotirao, his friends Sakharam Yeshwant Paranjpe and Keshav Shivram Bhawalkar took over her further schooling. She attended two teacher training programs—one at an institution in Ahmednagar led by an American missionary named Cynthia Farrar, and another at a Normal School in Poona, now called Pune. With this training, Savitribai might have been among the first Indian women to become a teacher and a headmistress.

Savitribai, alongside the influential feminist Sagunabai, began teaching girls in Maharwada, Pune—an initiative guided by Jyotirao. Soon after, they established their own school at Bhide-wada. Their curriculum focused on Western subjects like science, math, and social studies. Despite opposition from both upper and lower caste communities, who they aimed to uplift, the couple persisted. By 1851, they managed three girls’ schools in Pune, enrolling around 150 students. The Sudra community had been denied education for centuries, but the Phules aimed to change that. However, their efforts faced opposition, labeled as “evil” by some influenced by upper-caste beliefs. Surprisingly, more girls attended Phule’s schools than boys in government schools due to their unconventional teaching methods and curriculum. The local community’s conservative views led to the couple being asked to leave Jyotirao’s father’s house in 1849.

Savitribai took care of a child named Yashwantrao and served the people in his area as a doctor. During the Third Pandemic of the bubonic plague in 1897, which severely affected the Nallasopara region in Maharashtra, Savitribai and Yashwantrao courageously set up a clinic on the outskirts of Pune to treat those afflicted by the disease. They established the clinic in a remote area to avoid spreading the infection. Unfortunately, while caring for the patients, Savitribai herself contracted the illness and passed away on March 10, 1897.
