Shakuntala Devi came from a traditional Kannada Brahmin family. Her father, C V Sundararaja Rao, had a diverse career as a circus performer, engaging in acts like trapeze, lion taming, tightrope walking, and magic. Not much information is available about her mother and siblings. In 1960, she married Paritosh Banerjee, an Indian Administrative Service officer from Kolkata. It was during a card trick lesson from her father at the age of three that her remarkable memory for numbers was discovered. They have a daughter named Anupama Banerjee.

Because of her family’s difficult circumstances, she couldn’t attend school. However, at the age of 6, she showcased her incredible math talent at the University of Mysore. Afterward, she toured different universities in southern India, demonstrating her skills at places like Annamalai University, Osmania University, and the universities of Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam.

In 1944, Shakuntala gained international fame, touring numerous countries like the United States, Hong Kong, Japan, Sri Lanka, Italy, Canada, Russia, France, Spain, Mauritius, Indonesia, and Malaysia to display her math skills. She’s famously known for swiftly solving the multiplication of two 13-digit numbers—7,686,369,774,870 × 2,465,099,745,779 in just 28 seconds, earning a spot in the ‘Guinness Book of Records’ in 1982.

Her math prowess was exceptional. At Southern Methodist University in Dallas, USA, she calculated the 23rd root of a 201-digit number in 50 seconds, outdoing a professor who took four minutes to write the problem and a Univac computer that needed over a minute to solve it. Aside from mathematics, she excelled as an astrologer and authored various books on astrology, mathematics for kids, puzzles, cookery, and novels. Her 1977 book, ‘The World of Homosexuals,’ was groundbreaking as the first comprehensive study of homosexuality in India.


Shakuntala passed away on April 21, 2013, at the age of 83 due to respiratory, heart, and kidney issues. Her daughter, Anupama Banerji, resides in London with her two daughters, married to Ajay Abhaya Kumar. Shakuntala was remembered and celebrated on November 4, 2013, which would have been her 84th birthday, with a Google Doodle.
