Srinivasa Ramanujan Biography, Height, Age, Wife, Family, & More

Srinivasa Ramanujan FRS was a famous mathematician from India. He made big discoveries in numbers and studied things like elliptic functions, continued fractions, and infinite series. Even though he lived only a short time, his theorems are still taught worldwide. Ramanujan was really into number theory and equations, especially infinite series and prime numbers. He had about 6000 theorems, but he didn’t explain or prove them. His incredible talent and passion led to amazing math breakthroughs, shining a bright light on India’s name globally. In this article, you’ll find a comprehensive Srinivasa Ramanujan biography.

Srinivasa Ramanujan Biography

Srinivasa Ramanujan, an Indian mathematician, made important contributions to math, including analysis, number theory, and continued fractions. Despite not being aware of certain math advancements, he still proved theories and suggested formulas. Even though he had a short life, he discovered some incredible math ideas. He studied math on his own while working as a clerk for the Madras Port Trust. Recently, his discoveries have been used in physics, particularly his theta function, which is essential in string theory.

Robert Kanigel, with a knack for rich details, takes us on a journey from the temples and slums of Madras to the courts and chapels of Cambridge University. There, the devout Hindu Ramanujan, nicknamed “the Prince of Intuition,” tested his brilliant theories alongside the sophisticated and eccentric Hardy, known as “the Apostle of Proof.”

Family

His father, K. Srinivasa Aiyangar, worked as an accountant. His mother, Komalatammal, was the daughter of a city official. His brother’s name is Srinivasa Ramanujan. Furthermore, his siblings include Srinivasa Ramanujan.

Age

After coming back to Kumbakonam in 1919, located in Madras Presidency, Ramanujan passed away in 1920 at only 32 years old. Following his passing, his brother Tirunarayanan gathered Ramanujan’s remaining handwritten notes. These notes contained formulae about singular moduli, hyper geometric series, and continued fractions.

Education

Ramanujan completed his graduation from Cambridge on March 16, 1916, earning a Bachelor of Arts by Research (later called a Ph.D. from 1920). Even though he didn’t have all the required qualifications, he was permitted to enroll in June 1914.

Height and Weight

He was 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighed 66 kilograms.

Marriage

One day, while out with her friends, Ramanujan’s mother encountered a 9-year-old girl named Janki. On 14 July 1909, Ramanujan married Janaki (Janakiammal; 21 March 1899 – 13 April 1994), a girl his mother had selected for him a year earlier and who was ten years old when they married. She was captivated by the girl’s innocent look and playful eyes. Concerned about her son’s declining interest in mathematics, Ramanujan’s mother arranged his marriage to Janaki in 1908. However, after marriage, it became challenging for him to focus solely on mathematics. Consequently, Ramanujan began searching for better opportunities. It was not unusual then for marriages to be arranged with girls at a young age.

Career

In 1910, Ramanujan met V. Ramaswamy Aiyer, who started the Indian Mathematical Society. Wanting a job, Ramanujan became a clerk in 1912 but kept doing math research and gained more fame. Hoping for a job where Aiyer worked, Ramanujan showed him his math notebooks. Encouraged by many, including mathematician Seshu Iyer, Ramanujan sent a letter and around 120 math theorems to G. H. Hardy, a math lecturer at Cambridge University in England. Aiyer sent Ramanujan with letters to his math friends in Madras. Hardy, unsure if Ramanujan was a prankster or a hidden genius, asked another mathematician, J.E. Littlewoods, to check Ramanujan’s work. Some saw it and gave him letters to R. Ramachandra Rao, the district collector for Nellore and the Indian Mathematical Society’s secretary.

Death

Ramanujan passed away on April 26, 1920, in Kumbakonam, India, at the age of 32. While he was working at Cambridge University, his health started to decline. It’s believed that he most probably succumbed to hepatic amoebiasis, an illness that affects the intestines.

Net Worth

Srinivasa Ramanujan’s estimated net worth or income ranges between $1 million and $5 million dollars.
