Inspired by the financial model of the well-established Peerless Group, Roy adopted the concept of residuary non-banking companies (RNBCs) that accept minimal deposits. Sahara made notable international acquisitions, including the Grosvenor House Hotel in London in 2010 and the Plaza Hotel and Dream Downtown Hotel in New York City in 2012. Time magazine recognized Sahara as “the second-largest employer in India” in 2004, following the Indian Railways.
Beyond business, the Sahara group actively participated in societal welfare during natural disasters, contributing to relief efforts. With over 9 crore investors and depositors, Sahara’s impact extended to about 13% of Indian households. The group established medical health units, supported rehabilitation programs, and provided financial aid to the families of 127 martyrs from the Kargil War.
Subrata Roy envisioned venturing into online education with Edunguru, focusing on small towns and villages.
