In May 1981, when Sudha Chandran was just 16 years old, she encountered an unfortunate accident in Tamil Nadu. Initially, she received medical treatment for her injuries at a local hospital and was later admitted to Vijaya Hospital in Madras. It was during her stay there that doctors discovered the presence of gangrene on her right leg. This period marked one of the most challenging times in Chandran’s life. Despite the adversity, she eventually regained some mobility with the assistance of a prosthetic Jaipur foot. After a two-year hiatus, Sudha made a triumphant return to the world of dance and also ventured into acting, and performing in India, Saudi Arabia, and the United States.

Career

Sudha Chandran embarked on her career with the Telugu film Mayuri. Its Hindi adaptation, the 1986 movie Naache Mayuri, underwent changes in the cast, except for Sudha, to cater to North Indian sensibilities. Once again, Sudha portrayed herself in the film alongside Shekhar Suman, Dina Pathak, and Aruna Irani. Her exceptional performance in Mayuri earned her the prestigious 1986 National Film Award – Special Jury Award.
