Sudha Murty’s journey into the professional world was marked by breaking barriers and challenging gender bias. She achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first female engineer to be hired at India’s largest auto manufacturer, TATA Engineering and Locomotive Company (TELCO).In February 1974, Sudha came across a job vacancy advertisement at TELCO, but it came with a discouraging footnote: “Female candidates need not apply.” Undeterred by this blatant gender bias, she took a bold step and wrote a postcard directly to the company’s Chairman, highlighting the unfair “men only” policy at TELCO. Her act of advocacy and determination paved the way for her to be hired as a Development Engineer.
