Football Career

Sunil Chhetri’s football career began with Mohun Bagan Athletic Club in the National Football League, after playing with City FC in New Delhi. In his first season with Mohun Bagan in 2002-03, Chhetri scored four goals as the team finished 7th in the table. The following season, 2003-04, he managed to score two goals as the club finished 9th. In the 2004-05 season, Chhetri again scored two goals, and the team finished 8th, narrowly avoiding relegation. In 2005, Chhetri signed with JCT for the 2005-06 season. He had a successful stint, scoring 11 goals as the club finished in second place. During this time, Chhetri also represented Delhi in the Santosh Trophy, scoring two hat-tricks against Orissa and Railways in the group stages. Moving on to the I-League, Chhetri joined East Bengal for the next season.
