He, originally named Surinder Pal Dhammi, was born into a Ramgharia Sikh family on 20th May 1953 in Choti Ayali village, Ludhiana district, Punjab. At the time of his passing, he was 70 years old.
His father, Mistri Bachan Ram, was a carpenter and a classical singer and his mother, Videavati was a housewife.
He pursued his early education at Government Multipurpose Senior Secondary School in Ludhiana. After completing his schooling, he went on to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering, further enhancing his academic qualifications.

He was married to the cousin of Dev Tharikewala’s wife, a talented lyricist known for penning lyrics for both Surinder Shinda and Kuldeep Manak. His illustrious journey in the world of Punjabi music came to a close on Wednesday, 26th July 2023. After battling an infection that arose from an undisclosed surgery, he passed away at Dayanand Medical College & Hospital in Ludhiana, succumbing to kidney failure. The news of his passing sent shockwaves through the music industry and beyond, leaving a void that will be deeply felt by fans and fellow artists alike.
Surinder Shinda’s remarkable musical journey began in 1959, and over the years, he left an indelible mark on the Punjabi music industry, releasing an impressive total of close to 165 music albums.
