Career

Suryakumar Yadav initially played club cricket for Parsi Gymkhana Cricket Club, making a notable debut in first-class cricket with an impressive score of 73, being the sole player to achieve a half-century in first innings. Since then, he has consistently held a fixed position in the team. Apart from Parsi Gymkhana, he has also showcased his skills for the Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited team and other clubs like Shivaji Park Gymkhana Club and Dadar Union Club in club cricket.

In October 2018, Suryakumar Yadav earned a spot in India’s C team for the 2019 Deodhar Trophy. He became a senior and regular member of the Ranji team. His leadership skills were evident as he captained the cricket team for a brief period in the Ranji Trophy. However, during the 2014–15 Ranji Trophy season, he faced challenges as the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) removed him from captaincy and dropped him from the team in the 2018-19 season.

In his first series against England, Suryakumar Yadav showcased his class, and despite setbacks, he continued to prove himself. He maintained his captaincy role for the team in the 2020–21 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Even in ODIs, Suryakumar Yadav demonstrated resilience by consistently scoring double-digit figures in every game. In 2021, while playing for Parsi Gymkhana, he made a significant impact by scoring 249 runs in the final match against Payyade Sports Club in the ‘Police Shield’ tournament at the Police Gymkhana ground. With an impressive average of 54 in ODIs and a striking pace of 155 in Twenty20 Internationals, Suryakumar Yadav has made a strong start to his international cricket career.

Indian Premier League

Sporting Kolkata Knight Riders’ attire in the 2017 Indian Premier League, Suryakumar Yadav’s game has proven to be well-suited for shorter formats. Mumbai Indians (MI) recognized his potential, securing an IPL contract for the 2012 season by signing him in 2011 for a modest ₹10 lakh. Unfortunately, his opportunities were limited in that season, featuring in just one match where he was dismissed without scoring, unable to showcase his skills alongside cricket legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Rohit Sharma.

In the 2014 IPL auctions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) acquired Yadav for ₹70 lakh. His breakthrough moment came in IPL 2015 when he played a pivotal role, smashing a match-winning 20-ball 46 with five sixes against Indians at Eden Gardens. This performance elevated him to the team’s vice-captaincy, and he continued to contribute regularly.

2018 To 2023

In the 2018 IPL auctions, Indians secured Yadav for a significant ₹102 crore (US$13 million), marking his return to the team. Following an impressive stint, he was retained ahead of the 2022 season mega auction for INR 8 Cr. Unfortunately; he was sidelined from IPL 2022 due to a left forearm injury. Despite this setback, Indians included him again in the 2018 season.

Retained for INR 8 Crore in IPL 2023, Suryakumar Yadav further solidified his stature, earning accolades such as being ranked as ICC No.1 T20 batsman and receiving the Men’s Cricketer of the Year 2022 award. His outstanding contributions made him one of the most valuable players in IPL 2023. Following Kieron Pollard’s retirement, Yadav was appointed Vice-Captain of  Indians for IPL 2023, where he currently serves as the key batsman, commanding an annual fee of approximately ₹3.2 crores. Notably, he achieved his maiden IPL century against Gujarat Titans on May 12, 2023.

International career

In February 2021, Suryakumar Yadav received his maiden international call-up to the Indian cricket team, being included in the Twenty20 International (T20I) squad for the series against England. He made his T20I debut on March 14, 2021, showcasing an impactful start by hitting a six on the first ball he faced, a feat never achieved by an Indian in T20 Internationals. He went on to score a half-century in that match, earning recognition as an “X Factor” player by his captain.

Following his impressive T20I performances, Yadav was swiftly called up to India’s One Day International (ODI) squad for the series against England in March 2021. His game-changing displays at No. 3 solidified his role as a key player. In June 2021, he continued his international journey, being named in both the ODI and T20I squads for the series against Sri Lanka. He made his ODI debut on July 18, 2021, against Sri Lanka.

2021 To 2023

Notably, in September 2021, Yadav was part of India’s squad for the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. In June 2022, he featured in the Indian squad for the T20I series against Ireland, and in November 2022, he was added to the Test squad for the series against New Zealand, making his Test debut on February 9, 2023.

Yadav’s T20I achievements in 2022 were remarkable, including becoming the fastest batsman to score 1000 runs and scoring two centuries against England and New Zealand. In January 2023, he set a new record by scoring the second-fastest century by an Indian batsman in T20 Internationals against Sri Lanka. His Test debut, however, saw a unique record as he became the only Indian batsman to register three golden ducks in a three-match ODI series against Australia in March 2023.

Continuing his stellar performances, Yadav was selected for various series, including ODIs against West Indies, where he also served as the vice-captain in T20Is. His standout innings, including an 83-run knock in the third T20I against West Indies showcased his consistency and contributed to a series win. In the ODIs against Australia, he bounced back into form with two consecutive half-centuries.
