Unfortunately, a groin injury led to a sixth-place finish at the Asian Junior Championships, causing him to miss the 2016 World Junior Championships.

At just 17 years old, in November 2016, Tejaswin Shankar made headlines by breaking Hari Shankar Roy’s 12-year-old national record of 2.25 meters with an impressive jump of 2.26 meters at the Junior National Championships in Coimbatore. He ranked as the third-best IAAF junior high jumper globally that year.

In January 2018, Shankar surpassed Roy’s indoor national record with a mark of 2.18 meters, and the following month, he further improved it by an additional centimeter. His indoor record reached a remarkable 2.28 meters at the Big 12 Indoor Athletics Championships in Ames.
