Shankar, born into a Tamil household on December 21, 1998, in Delhi, attended Sardar Patel Vidyalaya in New Delhi. He initially played cricket until eighth grade, but upon the suggestion of his physical education teacher, he switched to high jump. Tejaswin Shankar quickly excelled, winning numerous prizes in interschool competitions. In 2017, he earned a four-year athletics scholarship to Kansas State University, where he pursued a degree in business administration. While in the US, he worked for Deloitte, a career choice considered unconventional for an active athlete. However, he later decided to leave this job and focus on being a “full-time athlete.”
Career
Shankar achieved remarkable feats in his high jump career. In the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games in Apia, he clinched the gold medal, setting a Games record with a jump of 2.14 meters. The following year, at the 2016 South Asian Games in Guwahati, he secured the silver medal with a leap of 2.17 meters. Unfortunately, a groin injury led to a sixth-place finish at the Asian Junior Championships, causing him to miss the 2016 World Junior Championships.
At just 17 years old, in November 2016, Tejaswin Shankar made headlines by breaking Hari Shankar Roy’s 12-year-old national record of 2.25 meters with an impressive jump of 2.26 meters at the Junior National Championships in Coimbatore. He ranked as the third-best IAAF junior high jumper globally that year.
In January 2018, Shankar surpassed Roy’s indoor national record with a mark of 2.18 meters, and the following month, he further improved it by an additional centimeter. His indoor record reached a remarkable 2.28 meters at the Big 12 Indoor Athletics Championships in Ames.
