Wife & Children, Affairs

Vijayakanth tied the knot with Premalatha on January 31, 1990, and the couple has two sons. One of their sons, Shanmuga Pandian, followed his father’s footsteps and became an actor, starring in movies like Sagaptham (2015) and Madura Veeran (2018). Their other son, Vijay Prabhakar Alagarswami, is known as an internet personality.

Before his marriage, there were rumors about Vijayakanth dating Radhika Sarathkumar, but he never officially confirmed their relationship. Despite this, they shared the screen in various films like Uzhavan Magan (1987), Neethiyin Marupakkam (1985), and Nanne Raja Nanne Mandhiri (1985).

Career

Vijayakanth, a prominent Tamil actor, dedicated his entire career to Tamil films, a rare choice among his peers. Despite this focus, he managed multiple releases within a single year. His movies, primarily in Tamil, found audiences in Telugu and Hindi after being dubbed. His journey to recognition began when his film Doorathu Idi Muzhakkam was featured at the Indian Panorama of the International Film Festival of India in 1980. However, it was S. A. Chandrasekhar’s Sattam Oru Iruttarai in 1981 that truly catapulted him into commercial success.

Earning the title “Puratchi Kalingar” (meaning revolutionary artist), Vijayakanth became renowned for portraying patriotic, village-centric characters and taking on dual roles in his movies. Despite his acclaim, some actors declined roles alongside him, and many renowned filmmakers hesitated to collaborate. His stint in the 1990 action thriller Pulan Visaranai established him as a significant figure in Tamil crime thrillers, especially with his portrayal of a police officer in over 20 films.

The pinnacle came in 1991 with Captain Prabhakaran, marking his 100th film. Known for his trademark gravity-defying stunts and a penchant for dispatching adversaries single-handedly, he gained the moniker ‘Captain’ owing to his role as an IFS officer in the movie. Corruption, honesty, and keeping promises were recurring themes in his films. In a significant collaboration, he appeared alongside Vijay, son of director S. A. Chandrasekhar, in the 1993 Tamil film Sendhoorapandi. Vijayakanth’s unwavering dedication to his craft was evident through his rigorous schedule of working three shifts per day.
