Virender Sehwag’s ODI career had a challenging start when he scored just 1 run against Pakistan in Mohali in April 1999 and was dismissed lbw by Shoaib Akhtar. During the 1997-98 seasons, Sehwag began playing for the Delhi cricket team, but his bowling performance was not particularly effective, conceding 35 runs off 3 overs. He also participated in the Duleep Trophy. Unfortunately, he did not receive another opportunity to play for the national team for 20 months. It was not until December 2000, during the home series against Zimbabwe, that Sehwag was given another chance. Before that, he was part of the U-19 team that toured South Africa. His performance in first-class cricket was consistently outstanding, making him a favorite among selectors.
